The furry fandom, a community that many would consider is weird or for individuals who are strange.
A Lot of them throw hatred at the fandom and I was one of them, not the throwing hatred part but thinking it was weird. It all started with being a ‘brony’, to those who don’t know what that is, it’s someone who likes my little pony. That’s where it all started for me, I always thought that it was a childish or ‘girly’ show, this is what others told me. Until one day I decided to watch the show because I was curious as to what all of the fuss was about, and as it turns out I really enjoyed the show. It wasn’t at all as ‘girly’ as others said it was, it even had some epic battles that I really enjoyed. One could say this was my turning point into the fandom because after the show died; which was a shame by the way, it was a really good show; I became part of the furry fandom because I had always loved wolves and saw a few other furries here and there that pulled me in.
Here is a fun story, it’s about how my fursona became a thing without me even trying. When I created my company/logo I wanted something to represent me and what I wanted to be seen as when doing business and content creation. This is why there is so much artwork of my blue wolf everywhere.
One amazing thing I can say about the community is how it helped me understand more about myself, for the first time I could express who I was I could be free. I was able to express myself in ways I never thought possible, it helped me discover things about myself that I never realized were there in the first place. Two years ago, I realized that I was gay and that I had always been like that and never noticed it because I was unable to openly express myself, something I would have never realized had I not watched one show, funny how small things can change your entire life.
One of the coolest things I got to experience was a furcon or furry convention which I talked about in this blogpost it was one of the best networking events I ever went to. I had so much fun and got to meet so many new friends that would go on to help me meet so many more friends but I am getting ahead of myself. It’s amazing how supportive the community is to each other, it creates a safe place for someone to learn things about themselves they never knew were there.
The fandom definitely changed my life forever, a change for the better. It being so open and LGTBQ+ friendly makes it a truly and amazing experience to express yourself and explore who you are as an individual. And surely the opportunities that come along with it will take you very far trust me I know how much I’ve gained from being in the fandom.
